There are differing opinions on this subject, but it has been my experience that children under the age of six do not always reap the full benefits of traditional private piano lessons. There are considerations such as hand size, finger dexterity, concentration, and the ability to assimilate and analyze. Learning to play the piano not only takes skills in the movements that are produced with our fingers and the pressure applied to the keys. The brain must also assimilate and analyze. When you consider that you’re asking a very small child to read two languages at the same time, use their two hands in totally different directions and then put expression and feeling into the music that you begin to realize what a task it is. The Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) website gives this recommendation: "Formal music lessons can begin when students are officially starting formal school, usually first grade."
